Reasons I Have Not Been Blogging

2009 January 22
by veggiegrrl
  1. Busy getting caught up on all 4 seasons of Bones
  2. Busy sitting around the house with a fever
  3. Busy getting ready for school to start again after winter break
  4. Busy pulling my school’s Poetry Out Loud competition together
  5. Busy taking Sprout to the E.R. for a 106-degree fever
  6. Busy sitting around the house with a sick, whiny boy
  7. Busy learning Korean on LiveMocha.com and Click Korean
  8. Busy coughing up a lung
  9. Busy migrating three websites from Textpattern to WordPress

That about summarizes my life since Christmas.  But I have things to blog about.  I’m telling you so you can remind me.  I want to mention:

  • crazy white people and affirmative action
  • Great American speeches
  • the eye incident
  • “colorblind” transracial parenting and white privilege
  • and…um…something else I can’t remember right now.  I hope it comes back to me.

Don’t let me forget, okay?  I’ll be back soon.

In the Flesh

The Word became
a human being
and lived here with us.

We saw his true glory,
the glory of the only Son
of the Father.

From him all the kindness
and all the truth of God
have come down to us.

John 1:14 (CEV)

Even though Christmas is kind of a crock (Jesus was not born on December 25 – sorry, Virginia – and the whole holiday has been co-opted by capitalistic market forces), the truth of the Incarnation is not a crock.  The true Light of heaven came down to our dark planet, got in the trenches with us, and showed us what God is really like: loving, fair, self-sacrificing.

No matter what the time of year, that is something worth celebrating.  May His love be visible in your life today.

Mommy, I want a pet. I like pets. I don’t want a tiger or a wolf. I don’t like those animals. I like a cat… or a zebra or a donkey or a cow.

For anyone involved in international adoption:

The Lie We Love

In reality, there are very few young, healthy orphans available for adoption around the world. Orphans are rarely healthy babies; healthy babies are rarely orphaned. “It’s not really true,” says Alexandra Yuster, a senior advisor on child protection with UNICEF, “that there are large numbers of infants with no homes who either will be in institutions or who need intercountry adoption.”

The author also has an investigative site that looks at country-specific issues.

Things that must be in Sprout’s bed before he can (will) go to sleep:

  • White pillow (to sleep on)
  • Big pillow (to “soft” while falling asleep)
  • Little pillow (backup “softing” pillow)
  • Mini pillow (portable “softing” pillow)
  • Cat pillow from Korea
  • Doggy blanket
  • Taggy blanket
  • Spotted blanket
  • Silky-soft blanket
  • James the black-and-white kitty
  • Little black-and-white kitty
  • Teddy bear
  • Fabric swatch

Also, the ceiling fan must be on, and his sleepytime CD must be playing.

This is why I never could keep a diary growing up.  I’d write in it for a week or so, bore myself to death, and it would wind up under my bed.

Yay for the end of the week!  Finally a chance to wind down and hope my eye stops twitching.

Veggieman and I have decided to trade off getting up with Sprout every other night.  He’s been waking up and wandering around the house, playing with toys at 3-4 AM almost every night for a few weeks now.  Tonight is my night to sleep!!

I have fallen off the big bloggy bandwagon.

Will try to get back on tomorow.

NaBloPoMo: Day 11

We seem to be getting sick again.  Sprout started with a new babysitter at the beginning of the school year, and it seems that we are not through all the new bugs from their house yet.  He has gotten a new cold every other week for the past two months, and either Veggieman or I end up with it in the long run.

Day care is not my favorite.  My favorite arrangement was when Veggieman worked full time mornings and evenings, and I worked part time afternoons.  One or the other of us was always home with Sprout. Right now I’m working full time and Veggieman is working part time, but the length of my commute makes it impractical for him to schedule his work time around me, so Sprout goes to daycare 2.5 days a week.

It’s amazing the things he is learning there!  So far, he has impressed (!) us with his recognition of Spiderman & Batman, the new phrase “I’m tellin’ on you” (which he uses somewhat inaccurately to mean “I’m mad at you” — he does not, apparently, realize that he is actually supposed to tell anyone anything after saying this), a demonstration of how to play guns, and the word “boobies.”  Good times.

I am probably sounding too negative about this.  He is a super-social little boy, and he loves being able to hang out with other kids.  He has lots of new friends and really enjoys that.  One of the other boys at the sitter’s is also a Korean adoptee, so that is a nice connection for him to have.

All things being equal, though, I’d rather have him at home with us.
