I have not read the legislation yet, but I have read both Ethica's opposition statement and JCICS's rebuttal, which I don't think was very strong. In particular, I don't think they adequately addressed Ethica's concern that debt relief and other aid is tied to allowing international adoption. (Saying that "allowing" is not the same as "conducting" in this context is pretty ridiculous, since obviously if it is "allowed" than SOMEONE will take the opportunity to "conduct.") If there's to be a real debate, they'll have to do better than that.

For the record, I am an international adoptee. In principle, I support international adoption, but frequently have concerns about the process.

Now...gotta actually read the legislation so as to be truly informed.

I found your post very interesting so I went to Thomas (link below for you) and read the legislation and to JCICS's website and did some research myself. Reading through the legislation I feel like Ethica, whom I respect, seems to have missed the ball or point. I also find it interesting that JCICS responded on their website (also linked below) to every single one of Ethica's statements. I wonder, have you read the bill? What were your thoughts when you read it?

Hi there,

I know you stay on the pulse of myriad of issues surrounding adoption, so I thought you’d be interested in sharing an intriguing trend recently covered by Essence.com: the increase in black, single women adopting: http://www.essence.com/news_entertainment/news/articles/single_black_woman_adoption_on_the_rise?xid=042909-blogher-adoption

I’d love to know your thoughts on this. Also, please let me know if this is something you'd like to link to--also feel free to share any content that we can link our audience to--your posts are great!

Thanks!

Read the play. However, depending on the version of film you have, show snippets of it during crucial scenes to reveal what might be going on in the character's mind. I've found that using both gives students the ability to picture it accurately, while creating an image for themselves. It's like LEGOs. You at least need something to base your creation. I also use lecture to introduce themes and symbols and basic plot.
